CO.OP Studio are incredibly proud to have collaborated with Jimmy’s Youth Sanctuary and YMCA Peninsula Youth Services to design and deliver Jimmy’s Youth Wellbeing Sanctuary. This project brings together a unique combination of the YMCA and the youth-focused charity, Jimmy’s Foundation. CO.OP Studio worked with both groups to support their desire to procure a new facility for YMCA’s work with disadvantaged youth on the Mornington Peninsula.
Jimmy’s Youth Wellbeing Sanctuary is dedicated to supporting young people by engaging them in holistic wellbeing and skill-based learning to enhance their mental, physical, and emotional health. The new building will enable the YMCA to enhance their initiatives with a facility that provides diverse spaces for both clients and staff. Conceptually, the design team envisaged the facility as a sanctuary for those needing relief from life’s stresses, offering purpose-built spaces for wellness, meditation, and reflection. This aligns with the YMCA’s desire to holistically support their clients in inviting and comfortable spaces.
Situated on the esplanade in Rosebud, the sanctuary is designed to break down barriers and create a welcoming, positive environment for the youth of Rosebud and the Mornington Peninsula. The facility features a variety of flexible zones, including a multi-functional main hospitality area, a central internal courtyard, a meditation and yoga room, a social enterprise café, a gallery space, and accommodation for specific youth retreats. Additionally, there are areas for skills training and short-term stays for both clients and staff. The central courtyard area allows a strong connection between a landscaped outdoor space and the two group spaces in the north and south portions of the pavilion. A rooftop area provides views towards the beach and another generous outdoor space.
Our team partnered with Fiona Brockhoff Design to create an amazing landscape design, which plays a crucial role in fostering a positive and calming atmosphere in and around the new facility. The CO.OP design team carefully considered structure and materials to promote a sense of safety and comfort for guests engaging in various modes of training and accommodation. The thoughtfully designed landscape complements the sanctuary’s mission to provide a nurturing space for young people to thrive. The outdoor areas encourage relaxation and reflection, with green spaces, gardens, and seating areas that invite young people to spend time outdoors and connect with nature.
In addition to the physical spaces, Jimmy’s Youth Wellbeing Sanctuary offers a range of programs and activities aimed at promoting holistic wellbeing. These include workshops, classes, and events focused on mental health, physical fitness, creative expression, and social connection. By providing a comprehensive approach to wellbeing, the sanctuary aims to empower young people to lead healthier, happier lives and build a strong foundation for their future.
