Kevin Murray Pavilion

In 2019, CO.OP Studio took on a significant project commissioned by Cricket Victoria to breathe new life into the iconic Kevin Murray Stand at Junction Oval, a Heritage Listed structure dating back to 1926. The proposed design aimed at revitalizing the 900-seat heritage grandstand, coupled with an intricate internal fit-out beneath, transforming the space into a hub of community activities with offices, meeting rooms, a commercial kitchen, and a dedicated delegates area. A notable addition to the project was a modern extension featuring a rooftop bar area, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary amenities.

Collaboration was a cornerstone of the endeavour, as we closely worked with the main building contractor, Cockram Constructions (now ICON), to expedite the building process. Negotiating the intricate landscape of heritage constraints, the project progressed steadily, strategically maneuvering, through areas that required additional negotiations and approvals. The design and construct contract, marked by intensity and pressure, ultimately yielded a timely and successful outcome.

This intricate project necessitated close cooperation with Parks Victoria and Heritage Victoria to ensure meticulous adherence to heritage guidelines. The restoration of the original building fabric employed traditional methods and materials, aligning with Heritage Victoria’s stringent requirements. CO.OP Studio’s commitment to preserving historical integrity while infusing modern functionality underscored the success of this ambitious undertaking, creating a harmonious blend of the past and present at Junction Oval’s Kevin Murray Stand.
