The Mildura Regional Sports Precinct is Mildura’s new sporting hub. Located on the southern fringe of the city, the Precinct is the focus of community sport in this heart of agriculture. The Precinct grounds take their place amongst some of the most fertile farmlands in Victoria, bound to the north by the Murray River, and further to the west by Lake Hawthorn and Lake Ranfurly.
The rhythmic and layered upper façade, with metal fins gauzily winding and wrapping the building, comes to life in the shadows and colourful bounce found in Mildura’s crisp and bright light. While the upper façade beams, the lower façade rests stoically in a base of running bond brick. The special light makes for sharply struck shadow lines at its joints.
The sculpted blanket of stone, plant and pitch that surrounds the great hall of sport is befitting this place of civic gathering. Verdant bodies of playing fields and landscape invite passersby to stop and linger on their way in.
Positioned to enable ongoing expansion to meet increasing community demand, Stage 1 of the development includes six indoor courts for basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal and badminton, which are supported by change administrative and social facilities. External facilities include an elite standard football and cricket field of play and community pavilion.
Stage 2, currently under construction, includes four squash courts and additional change facilities to serve the second football and cricket field of play, cricket nets, four beach volleyball courts, four outdoor netball courts and additional car parking.
