Bundha Sports Centre is Australia’s first multi-level community indoor court facility, offering sports and recreation opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels in Melbourne’s inner north. The two upper levels each contain two multi-purpose courts for community basketball, netball, and volleyball, as well as social-level badminton.
A significant community facility for one of the Victorian Government’s largest urban redevelopments, the Centre offers maximum operational flexibility by co-locating courts in a vertically stacked arrangement, with the budget kept on track through innovative design and material applications.
Part of the stakeholder engagement process included identifying the building’s southern façade as an opportunity to integrate an inspiring mural designed by Wurundjeri man, Alex Kerr. The mural weaves through themes of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country in the background, to represent the lands the building is located on. Alongside these elements, the mural celebrates First Peoples’ community sporting heroes, with one of the aims being to inspire the youth visiting the Centre and broader Fitzroy Gasworks precinct.
The Bundha Sports Centre was gifted its official name by Aunty Gail Smith, with the support of Aunty Di Kerr, Aunty Julieanne Axford, and the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation (WWCHAC). ‘Bundha’, meaning ‘unity’, reflects the Centre’s role in bringing the community together by supporting local sports clubs and encouraging active participation.
